A good restaurant closing checklist is not a long list of boxes that everyone taps without looking. It is a way to make sure the restaurant is secure, required close-down procedures were completed, and tomorrow's team knows what actually happened.
Download the restaurant closing checklist (CSV). It opens in a spreadsheet; no account or email is needed.
The five areas to check
The downloadable file groups tasks by work area. Customize every row for your restaurant, local requirements and approved operating procedures.
1. Kitchen and food safety
Confirm required cleaning and sanitizing steps were completed, food was stored and labelled appropriately, equipment was shut down according to its manufacturer's procedure and any temperature or incident logs required by your plan were completed. Use your approved food-safety plan and applicable local rules, not a generic checklist, as the controlling standard.
2. Front of house
Make sure seating and service areas are reset appropriately, guest property and any open guest issues are handled, and reservations or private events affecting the following shift are visible to the right staff.
3. Cash, orders and payments
Reconcile the shift using your POS and authorized manager procedures. Flag exceptions rather than putting card numbers, customer payment details or register credentials in a shared checklist. Record whether unresolved pickup or delivery orders require follow-up.
4. Security and facilities
Follow the restaurant's approved lockup, alarm, keys, utilities and equipment procedures. Report maintenance or access problems using a secured internal method. Do not publish alarm instructions, door codes or access credentials.
5. Tomorrow's handoff
Note missing stock, sold-out items, changed hours, staffing gaps, pending guests and decisions still awaiting approval. Assign an owner for each unresolved issue.
A simple closeout rhythm
- Work area owners check their own tasks. One name and a real status is better than everyone marking everything done.
- Record exceptions. An unresolved food-safety or guest issue is not complete merely because the normal closing time passed.
- Manager checks the critical items. Use your actual internal escalation standards for safety, security and financial issues.
- Create tomorrow's handoff. Summarize confirmed changes, open questions and who owns each follow-up.
- Save the record where staff can find it. Keep any sensitive documents in approved systems, not in an unsecured public link.
What Kitch can help prepare
Kitch can turn the confirmed non-sensitive end-of-shift facts you provide into a draft manager brief: what changed, what must be checked, and who needs to decide. It should not claim to have inspected equipment, verified a temperature, reconciled a till or locked a door unless an authorized system supplied actual proof.
Frequently asked questions
Does this replace a food-safety or safety-management plan?
No. Follow local rules, your approved plan, required training and manufacturer procedures.
Can I use this for a café, bar or multi-location group?
Yes, as a starting structure. Remove irrelevant rows, add location-specific procedures and designate the correct approval role.
Can I turn the closeout into the next day's opening brief?
Yes. Use the handoff rows to identify what is confirmed, still open and assigned. A weekly staff schedule template can help with staffing context.
